So what is the least expensive option? Contrary to what most people think, it is the Upholstered Church Pew. As a matter of fact, a fully upholstered church pew is not only the most comfortable but also the most economical, which makes it the most popular choice of today’s churches.

There is a good rule of them to remember regarding the price of church pews – “The more wood showing, the more it will cost”. Let’s take a closer look at what sets these two types of pews apart from each other in style and price.

Upholstered Church Pews

A fully upholstered pew body has an upholstered seat, an upholstered front of the seat back and fabric covering the rear of the seat back.

IF NOT MANUFACTURED CORRECTLY the use of plywood in a church pew can also lead to a less durable one. This is what sets King Church Furniture’s upholstered pew apart from the competition -  our high quality of construction. We use ¾” plywood for our upholstered pews, which is reinforced for strength and durability with a 1 1/2” x 2 1/2” solid hardwood brace. The Church Furniture Manufacturing Association states that this is the best method of construction and we agree.

Finished Church Pews

A fully finished pew is made completely of solid hardwoods, such as mahogany, but can vary according to customer preferences.

What sets the finished pew apart from the upholstered pew is the higher quality of wood used for the body and the amount of hand-crafted labor needed to create these pieces. One finished church pew is usually created from numerous pieces of raw unmanufactured hardwood. This ultimately means a more durable, longer lasting pew that will take many years of wear before refinishing is needed.

To give you some perspective on the amount of effort that goes into making one of these handcrafted masterpieces, take a look at the steps below.

• Hand-picked Raw hardwood is selected
• It is then cut down into straight panels/boards
• These panels/boards are then glued and clamped together to make a larger solid piece
• The larger piece is then planed down to the appropriate thickness
• They are then cut to the appropriate length
• It is machined into the respective shapes and contours
• Then it undergoes machine sanded for a primary smoothness
• Each piece is hand sanded for a very smooth finish
• Its then assembled by hand  to our exacting and precise standards
• It is ultimately finished with a high-quality stain and varnish for a long lasting and durable finish

In June of 1978, King Church Furniture was selected to install the church pews for Greater Beulah Baptist Church in Dothan, Alabama. 28 years later, in November of 2000, we were invited to manufacture new pews for their chapel. The pews they selected had a waterfall end, customized with the church’s initials: GBBC. Then, in July of 2003, our company manufactured 1,150′ of pews as well as custom chancel furniture to furnish their newly completed sanctuary.
